For someone with an interest in the mysterious, absurd and supernatural then Fortean TV was an absolute MUST SEE back in the 90s on UK television.
Fortean TV ran from just 1997 until Dec 1998 but had a huge influence on me in my pre internet days.
Hosted by the Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe , rarely seen without his customary leather motorbike jacket, Fortean TV was a 30 minute trip into the weird and wonderful from around the globe.
Now Network have released the complete series on DVD for the very first time. All 23 episodes which are Series 1 (9 episodes) , Series 2 (9 episodes) , Fortean TV Uncut (4 episodes) amd the final episode which was an hour long Christmas Special!
On three discs you get everything in all it’s 90s glory. Each episode is around 25 minutes long (no adverts here) so perfect for a bitesize dip into Fortean goodness.
To whet your appetites the first episode has sections on a mermaid autopsy, raining straw and fish, the miracle fish of Kangal, holy Islamic aubergines in Bolton and lastly the Puerto Rican goat sucker – El Chupacapra !! All that in just 25 minutes PLUS a song from the Rev himself.
Fortean TV just brings a smile to this guys face , I suppose it harks back to a time before information was instantly accessible and when you waited for new episodes with bated breath . Probably my favourite parts of the series were when regular (well maybe not that regular) people were featured , highlights include the guy leaving a pub with a pork scratching in the image of the Virgin Mary (at a squint) and many more,
While I laud this release it is a little disappointing that there are no extras at all. I would have loved just a little something. But hey to have all this together and for the amazing price then I am not complaining (much).
This is a MUST BUY for anyone with an interest in the obscure , esoteric or weird. An amazing trip down memory lane 8/10 !
